Puebla and Oaxaca

Next stop Puebla. Scene of a glorious victory against the French on May 5 1862 (Cinco de Mayo) - every town has a street withi this name. Strange little colonial town, built round a zocalo (square) like everywhere else. And if your a man on your own, don't go into the square after dark and just sit there, take it all in and chill out. I had to do a runner from that square as I was getting a bit edgy about Carlos the gay dentist inching his way toward me on the park bench - I've never seen so much Vaseline in someone's hair. Well at least not since my days at SPC in Kilbirnie. Carlos was pretty much the only person I met in Puebla. I left there after two nights.

Oaxaca was a cool place. And home to a great tasting, stringy cheese (Fonterra eat your hearts out), but one which I only discovered in Puerto Escondido (mmm ham and cheese toasted tacos). Stayed at at a great little hostal around a central courtyard called Hostal Pochon. $60 pesos/night and run by a French woman and her Jewish man. They now have a great selection of music as I gave them all my songs from the old iPod.

Just chillin'

That Mezcal is strong stuff...and Oaxaca is the home of it. I think it goes up to 70 proof and it doesn't all taste like petrol - especially after awhile...

Mani and Cedar - these were a couple of cool Aussie girls from Avalon in North Sydney.
