Survival
One day i'm gonna put up a little paper about coastal management between England and good ol' NZ up here. I've been meaning to write one for the NZ Coastal society for ages now but am just too lazy. I've had it half written for a month or two (do you see a pattern emerging here? i do...). There's plenty of stuff to look at.
It's funny because my one and only employee is heading off to move to NZ, he hopes Kaikoura, for the surf some time toward the end of this year.
What's not funny is the current and persistent state of flux in my team at the moment and has been ever since I arrived. They always have told me that things will be getting better. It appears to be developing into one of those situations where you know you should leave but there are things that mean you can't, or wont. For instance, I have achieved almost sweet f.a up until this point, I really feel like i need to do something, and that something is the Shoreline Management Plan - possibly the most unsuccessful piece of engineering policy ever! Our head of service who is really lovely lady, and one of the main reasons for me coming is leaving for another department. Therefore, our new manager who has been in post for about 3 months is now doing her job, the other guy who was going to 'act up' into her job has resigned for another job earning more £, so it falls to the alien with 8 months UK experience to possibly take on another managerial post until replacements are found...better fucking not be. As the most senior manager left - what a joke! Plus i'm supposed to be getting another 5 or so staff to work for me soon - in sustainable development and sustainable communities - of which i know nothing about!
Then there's the fact that there are two guys getting a free ride in our team, one took early retirement a few years back and somehow swindled the Council for a wage of £25K for not being there. And the other guy just reads papers and talks shit about his old naval stories all day. Great fun, but what a waste of money!
I think the only thing i'm going to learn here is how to be a bullshit artist to keep things afloat. What a marvellous skill to learn...bring on the real work!
